P.ink Day Denver 2018 – Empowering Breast Cancer Survivors with Free Tattoos

For the second year in a row, our team here at Brother Mobile Solutions joined forces with the Denver chapter of P.ink (Personal Ink) to sponsor P.ink Day Denver in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On October 26, our friends at All Sacred Tattoo-Foundation studio in Edgewater, Colorado provided complimentary tattoos for pre-selected breast cancer survivors – helping them put a beautiful new spin on lingering cancer scars.

P.ink (pronounced “Pea-ink,” short for Personal Ink) is a nationwide non-profit organization dedicated to working with local leaders in regions across the nation to offer breast cancer survivors free mastectomy tattoos. The tattoo designs are created specifically to cover mastectomy and other breast surgery scars with beautiful and inspirational artwork – helping survivors regain confidence, reclaim their relationship with the mirror, and refuse to let cancer leave the final mark.

P.ink Day Denver was just one of the organization’s many events in October 2018. The Boulder, Colorado chapter held its fifth annual P.ink Day earlier this month as well, and the movement reaches far beyond Colorado. This year’s P.ink Days span 14 cities across the U.S. and Canada, with over 100 women receiving tattoos symbolic of love, life, hope, and empowerment.

Led by Karen Richards, P.ink’s executive director and a 16-year breast cancer survivor, the third annual P.ink Day Denver provided metro area breast cancer survivors with creative tattoos designed to help them progress in their healing – transforming reminders of disease into representations of strength and beauty.

Transformative tattoos to transform lives

According to Breastcancer.org, there are more than 3.1 million women in the U.S. who have completed treatment for breast cancer or are still being treated1. Many of these women have experienced mastectomies and some have opted for mastectomy with breast reconstruction.

“Since our founding, one of our primary goals has been to raise awareness that ink tattoos can provide a creative way for surgery survivors to disguise scarring and enhance their body image,” noted P.ink’s executive director Karen Richards. “Our efforts in helping to provide complimentary tattoos have proven successful, as evidenced by the growing number of cities joining the cause and the number of applicants now on our waiting list.”

Without a doubt, tattoo artists and cancer survivors alike have gathered across North America in support of the transformative impact these tattoos can have – both physically and emotionally.

“I don’t know anybody who hasn’t been touched by cancer,” said Aries Rhysing, tattoo artist at All Sacred Tattoo. “For me, to be able to give back and allow art to happen and healing to happen in this studio is a profound opportunity, and I love it.”

Angela Swanson, our own director of marketing at Brother Mobile Solutions, echoed this sentiment of giving back and helping others heal. “We at Brother are incredibly proud to be a part of P.ink’s important grass-roots initiative to offer these transformative tattoos,” she said. “We’re inspired by the successful growth of their all-volunteer movement over the past six years, and we love that our compact, high-resolution S8 Tattoo Stencil Printer can play a role in bringing the artist’s and the survivor’s healing vision to life.”
